We had an exciting day today as the Grade 4 and 5 classes both engaged in some hands on learning!
The grade 4 class had the good fortune to have an engineering lesson on gears. From what I can tell, it was a wonderful educational experience. Students were introduced to different types of gears and then spent time building their own gear designs for different purposes.
The grade 5 class were with me and we launched our bridge building or our Forces on Structures and Mechanisms unit. To begin the project students did some inquiry around the following topics:
Bridges: Why do we use them? What are the positive impacts? What are the negative environmental impacts?
What materials are used to build bridges and why?
How do you build a stable bridge?
What are the most common types of bridges?
How does weather affect bridges and structures?
Then we started experimenting with different bridge structures, shapes and materials as a first step towards building our final bridge.

I hope everyone enjoys their four day holiday weekend!
See you on Tuesday!
