Reminders:
PLEASE RETURN PERMISSION FORMS FOR THE MARKHAM FAIR ASAP
Please hand in Scholastic orders ASAP as well.
There is a math test on Friday. The test will cover: Place value, numbers in written, standard and expanded form, estimating, using mental math to add and subtract as well as problem solving.
What happened today?
Social Studies: Grade 5 students started creating a charter of rights (social studies expectation) for their fictional societies. We will continue this tomorrow and then we will compare them to the Candadian Charter! (Social Studies, Critical Thinking)
Math: Students were introduced to the 4 step math solving process. The teacher modelled it, then they practiced individually on some problems.
The Four Steps to Solving Math Problems:
1. Understand: What am I being asked to do? What do I know?
2. Plan: What strategy will I use?
3. Do: Do and show the work to prove I'm right!
4. Check: Look back. Is my answer reasonable?
They also practiced mental math.
Literacy: The teacher modelled using a graphic organizer to plan their reading responses as well as a graphic organizer to help organize paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details and concluding sentences. Students did a wonderful job of working indepndently and quietly on their Literacy centres while I completed almost all of the oral reading assessments.
They then completed a spelling test.
Students learned French and Music in the afternoon and played Elf, Dwarf, Wizard for Daily Physical Activity.
I want to send a special thanks to everyone for being so focused and calm during the oral reading assessments. Well done!
