Current Event Resources
Students have been asked to find articles on current events. Here are some excellent resources.
www.newsela.com
The only site you have to sign up for. It is worth it because you can choose your reading level for each article! I can also assign articles if I'd like.
To sign up you will need this code: JP6F9Y
The other sites I recommend are:
www.cbc.ca/kids
www.teachingkidsnews.com
www.dogonews.com
www.timeforkids.com

Back to the Future
Please be aware I would like tests signed and returned once again. I will contintue to send reminders on Remind, post on the site and put notes in the Agendas. I became concerend parents weren't getting the tests if I didn't ask for them to be signed. Sorry about the confusion.
Please sign up for Remind!
I sent home a letter requesting parents sign up for Remind - a free, safe, secure and super easy to use text service that allows me to send reminder texts to your phones.
All you have to do is the following:
If you are in Mr. Burns' Class: text @a523c3 to this number (289) 803-3099.
If you are in Grade 5 in Mrs. Kenwell's class: text @socstsc to (289) 803-3099
Read the Remind Letter for more information.
With this in mind I am altering the process of tests being handed out. I will no longer require them to be signed and returned.
When tests or assignments are sent home I will send a notification through Remind, students will write a note in their agendas and I will post it on the website.
Remind's inventor has quite an inspiring story. Read about it here:

Prodigy Math - More Than a Game!
I have set up the class on Prodigy a math game approved by York Region District School Board. Here is the link: https://www.prodigygame.com/Canada/
I have spent some time reviewing the game and am very impressed. It's a fun game but that's just the start. The students have to solve math problems which are directly linked to the Ontario curriculum. In addition, it tracks their progress and adjusts difficulty according to their level. Even better than that, I get real time reports as to student strengths and weaknesses so I can intervene and help. And even better than THAT, I can specifically assign skills for students to practice, which doesn't alter game play at all.
I'll be assigning this for homework and we will be using it in class.
Since it is tracking student success it is very IMPORTANT students do not use a calculator or when doing the problems. They can use paper and there are ways to work out questions in the game as well by writing, using number blocks and fraction strips.
More to follow on the daily posts!

Daily Schedule Added
I have now added a calendar the day 1-5 schedule for every day of the month for the rest of the year. Hover over the "Home" button above and then click on the "Daily Schedule" page.
Video Resources Added to the Share a Resource Page
If you hover your mouse over the "Share a Resource" page, you will now see a page titled "Math Resources". On that page you will find videos I have found which review key concepts. This will allow students and parents to review at home, which I hope will be helpful for those who were asking me for ideas to support their children at home. I will continue to add resources for math and different subjects throughout the year.
The Daily Schedule
Here is a picture of the lovely student schedule that I made with my incredible art skills, as per the requests of some parents last night on curriculum evening. Be aware that the days shift if there are P.D. days and holidays. As of today - Oct 14 - Mondays are Day 3.
Contact Information
Contact information for Mr. Burns is now available in the "Contact Tab"
Welcome to the Grade 4/5 Site for Mr. Burns' Class
I've been updating the page and have just had a great idea. I've added a link above called "Share a Resource". If any students come across any resouces they would like to share they can post it there. For example, when talking about internet behaviour and safety during our Health unit on Internet Safety a student mentioned a website they were familiar with that dealt with this topic. This could be posted here. If students find a site that is useful for explaing a math or writing concept that would be a good thing to share! If students find information which relates to a topic in science, social studies or any othe topic we are studying they could also share that.
If social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Blogger and the rest have taught us anything it's that people love to share things they discover and feel are interesting and usefule to others. Why not harness that with our website?
