Strangest day... everything was upside down. Kids were wearing pajamas! Students taught each other division in math! Students are meditating! What is going on?
We had serveral interesting and new things happen today. One was pajama day. That was fun!

We took step 2 in our first foray into flipped learning (that was alliteration kids!).
Students came in and most had learned a new division strategy by watching the videos they were given. Some had difficulty understanding the strategies on the videos. No problem! We were going to learn these strategies in class as well.
Step 1:
Students fromed small groups of 3-4 students and explained to each other, using step by step instructions, how they solved a problem that they had created using a strategy they learned.
Step 2:
Students volunteered to explain their strategies to the whole class.
This is where things got interesting. A student tried to explain the Salley Method (see division strategy videos). Some students (and the teacher) were a bit confused so we loaded up the video and watched it step by step as a class, clariffying any confusion along the way. Turns out the student was compeletly correct in his explanation. But we all learned a new strategy.
Interesting stuff!
Meditation
Our focus in Grade 5 health is on stress management. We did a mindfulness meditation today. Students found it so helpful some asked if we could do it every day. My answer to this is...yes! We will continue to practice mindfulness as it helps one to relax and focus. This just happens to be the perfect state for learning. :)
I personally felt much more refreshed and calm. It was really quite amazing.
Character Matters Assembly
Boxwood's end of the month Character Matters assembly was today. Congratulations to those who won character awards for honesty and collaboration.
Literacy
We took some time to reflect on our writing today. Students looked at their writing and chose the piece they were most proud of. They then wrote an explanation reflecting on why they had chosen it. They shared some work with others.
Most student selections have been scanned to the google drive where they are in their folders. If parents would like to see a piece of writing that their son or daughter is proud, ask them to show you. :)
And the rest...
Somehow, amidst all that fun, we still managed to do drama and French.
What a day!
